A LONG-TERM REFLECTION
It is widely known that water is a fundamental requirement for human survival. Unfortunately, the current water consumption model is not sustainable. On average, individuals consume 1.5 liters of mineral water daily, resulting in an approximate annual consumption of 547 plastic bottles per person. Not only is this model economically inefficient, but it also leads to a build-up of plastic which can only be recycled once. A potential solution to this issue is the use of water canisters, which are commonly utilized by companies and can be adapted for households. In Tunisia, there are water factories that make this service available; one simply needs to obtain reusable canisters and make trips to refill them every week or two.
To successfully adopt this model, the following items must be acquired:
- Water bottles from the factory of your choice (at least three)
- Glass bottles or jugs (at least four) that will allow you to easily serve water at home and refrigerate it in summer
- Water bottles (one per family member) that will allow you to take your water wherever you go and avoid having to buy plastic bottles during the day
With respect to the consumption of non-potable water:
- It is important to be mindful of water usage and to ensure that the water is not running when not in use. This includes when shampooing or using body wash in the shower, brushing teeth or washing hands at the sink, and washing dishes at the sink.
- Take quick showers.
