Discovering Ichkeul National Park

GOVERNORATE OF BIZERTE

12/04/2025

The Ichkeul National Park is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in North Africa. Classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1977 and a national park in 1980, it covers an area of 12,600 ha and is made up of three landscapes: the lake, with an average surface area of 8,500 ha, the surrounding marshes of 2,737 ha and a Jebel, a limestone massif rising to 511 m, which overlooks it to the south.
The park is home to more than seven of Europe's water basins and ornithological streams, giving it a wealth of flora and a large bird population. The park is also a major site for water buffalo, a species that served in the Tunisian royal army for almost a century. The park has been home to numerous populations, notably Phoenician and Roman, and Roman remains can be found in the parking lot of the Hammam Ben Abbès.
